PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Glenn Tarver Growing Our Congregation Committee
We are underway with improving our web site. We have gathered many good suggestions from a variety of sources. Almost all Sunday morning visitors and newcomers discover us by browsing the internet. We intend to make our web site even more attractive. Thank you to Ron for chairing the new web site committee that includes Gabriela, Susan, John, Judy and Glenn. Our target date for completion is Dec 31 2023. Our other important initiative will be marketing ourselves and Unitarianism to the broad Toronto community. We are exploring a possible cost-sharing collaborative effort with other congregations and the CUC. |
President's Message, continued...
Financials In the past year, the costs for managing our congregation and our units at Wynford have been increasing. Some of this is related to the assessed building management shared costs resulting from the two lengthy power outages. And we are now preparing for replacement of one of the heat pumps in our units. In recent years, we have great difficulty balancing our budgets. To maintain the current level of service amidst rising costs, we have had to remove money from our investments accounts. Please consider increasing your member contributions. A pledge made a few years ago has diminished in real value for Don Heights. A 2023 donated dollar is worth much less than a donated dollar pre-COVID. We will be providing a pledge form and, of course, an income tax receipt. |

Book now for our Canadian Authors event in person or on Zoom with the ever-engaging Rick Pyves on Sunday, November 5 from 1 pm to 2:30 pm. We're serving chili, including a vegetarian option, along with a spectacular presentation from Rick about his book, Courage, Sacrifice and Betrayal, which provides a detailed account of the day-to-day operations of the 60th Battalion and the lives of its many soldiers. Cost is $10. Please invite your friends, especially those you know who follow World War history. The 60th is one of only 50 battalions to actually fight as a unit as part of the CEF, the Canadian Expeditionary Force, in the First World War. Fittingly, this will mark the start of Remembrance Week at a time when the issue of war and peace looms large. A discussion will follow the author's lively show and tell.

Please support our move to return regular, interesting events to Don Heights.
Don Heights HistoryIn 2019, Don Heights hosted an exhibit of rare WWI artifacts, co-curated by members John Kennedy and Sheila White, marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. It received lavish media coverage, including from CBC and CTV. (Click to view.) Read the article.

Brian Morgan takes to our stage at Bill's Coffeehouse at Don Heights on Friday, November 10. Our super-fun Open Mic night and featured, two-set concert will be ready to roll and welcome guests and performers for the 8 pm start. You don't have to RSVP, but there is a form if you want to confirm that you or your group will be attending or intending to be part of the show. Prepare to have a good time over coffee, tea and cookies. Don Heights pays our feature act. The suggested $5 cover charge helps us foot the bill. We're glad people can join on Zoom too using our e-transfer payment option.
Brian Morgan is a fiddler, bassist and guitar player whose musical experiences have included stints in a tuxedo-clad, lounge lizard quartet, a road-weary duo ill-named Mac’n’Tosh, a retro rock band called Bage Gao Bizi (Eight High Noses), which performed regularly in Chongqing (1988), as well as the Motorgrass band, Jughead. Throughout, Brian has been writing original songs and performing them to appreciative crowds.
