PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Glenn Tarver After a recent inspection by an HVAC technician, it was determined we require a thorough cleaning of the coils in our ceiling that are connected to the building heat pump. This work will be completed sometime in April. We anticipate this, and the arrival of warmer weather, will end the need to wear an extra layer of clothing on Sunday mornings.
The next meeting of the Growing Our Congregation Committee will be Tuesday May 2 in person at Wynford. We are making good progress. Others are welcomed to join us. We value new suggestions and bright minds. Our next board meeting is Tuesday, May 9 on Zoom at 7 o'clock. Lay Chaplain Sheila WhiteA Celebration of Life honouring Sandra Morgan will be held at Don Heights on Saturday, June 10 at 2:30 pm. All are welcome. We're asked to wear bright and cheery colours as a way to celebrate Sandra as she would have wanted.
Condolences to our office adminstrator Heather Vesh whose mother Evelyn Vesh, a retired nurse, died at the age of 92 on March 25 after leading a good, full life.

Classical music at its finest!
|
Bill's Coffeehouse & Open Mic at Don Heights is the place to be on the second Saturday in May. Why?You can’t allow yourself to miss the performance featuring Deepani de Alwis, a superb stylist at the piano keys. Come to our auditorium and hear this gifted artist take command of our grand, heritage Steinway gem. Cost: $5.
|
Canadian-born Sri Lankan pianist and singer Deepani de Alwis returned to Canada after her musical studies in Italy and Scotland. Deepani will play a mixed program of music that was composed after 1880. She has performed live on RAI 3 in Rome and made her debut with the Glasgow Chamber Orchestra playing the Schumann Piano Concerto in Glasgow, Scotland. She received the National Gold medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music Licentiate in Piano Performance in 2015 and has been teaching and performing both her arts in Toronto and overseas. You can also enjoy the entertainment on Zoom, in our 100-seat capacity virtual room. In between sets, Open Mic artists will entertain, and that could be you! All are welcome.

Sunday Services
Sharyn Devine
There's always something to look forward to at Don Heights. Hearing from a newly elected Toronto councillor in Jamaal Meyers (Ward 23) will be a special treat on May 28, followed by our potluck. In June we will be delving into topics ranging from racism and diversity to Anishinabek Nation spirituality and art.
Dream Auction
The Dream Auction will be best held in the fall, we decided. Do you have a dream to donate to our fundraiser? Now's the time to step up with ideas, helping hands and your volunteer hours to build an event that will raise us lots of cash. Speak to me about it and together we can make things happen. A small committee is needed.

MAY IS FOR MOTHERS
A special Sunday service for Mother's Day - author Deb Stratas, back by popular demand. She'll be sharing stories from her latest book, The Brave Women of WWII London. The men went off to fight, which left these brave women with immense responsibilities. They looked after the children, took on jobs, battled rationing, the Blitz, and war tragedies. And then they joined the forces. This 30-minute interactive talk will reveal what these courageous women did as they kept calm and carried on during the Second World War.

Restoring the Potluck Magic
We savoured the moment! Our celebrated potluck lunches have returned on the fourth Sunday of each month. April's inaugural comeback luncheon was an obvious success. Look at all those smiles. What you can't see are the happy tastebuds. A communal meal is an important part of fellowship and community outreach. We can hardly wait for the next one on May 28 after the Sunday Service.

This Month's Wise Words
Once we start to act, hope is everywhere. So instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then, and only then, hope will come.
